Studoval na re\u00e1ln\u00e9m gymn\u00e1ziu, kde maturoval roku 1916. D\u00e1le studoval na p\u0159\u00edrodov\u011bdeck\u00e9 fakult\u011b Karlovy univerzity a zde z\u00edskal roku 1922 doktor\u00e1t p\u0159\u00edrodn\u00edch v\u011bd. Po absolutoriu Karlovy univerzity pokra\u010doval ve studiu v Pa\u0159\u00ed\u017ei na Sorbon\u011b a d\u00edky dvoulet\u00e9mu stipendiu studoval rovn\u011b\u017e radiologii, a to pod p\u0159\u00edm\u00fdm veden\u00edm Marie Curie-Sk\u0142odowsk\u00e9.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Po n\u00e1vratu do \u010ceskoslovenska p\u016fsobil na St\u00e1tn\u00edm radiologick\u00e9m \u00fastavu (zalo\u017een 1919). Roku 1926 se z\u00fa\u010dastnil na p\u0159\u00edmou p\u0159\u00edmluvu pan\u00ed Sk\u0142odowsk\u00e9 \u010d\u00e1sti v\u00fdpravy Roalda Amundsena k severn\u00edmu p\u00f3lu, vzducholod\u00ed Norge. Prov\u00e1d\u011bl m\u011b\u0159en\u00ed na \u0160picberk\u00e1ch, ale vlastn\u00edho letu k p\u00f3lu se je\u0161t\u011b nez\u00fa\u010dastnil \u2013 let\u011bly jen jeho m\u011b\u0159ic\u00ed p\u0159\u00edstroje. Roku 1928 byl jako specialista na kosmick\u00e9 z\u00e1\u0159en\u00ed v\u011bdeck\u00fdm \u010dlenem pos\u00e1dky vzducholodi Italia, pod veden\u00edm gener\u00e1la Umberta Nobileho. Na vzducholodi Italia, jako prvn\u00ed \u010cech, p\u0159elet\u011bl nad severn\u00edm p\u00f3lem. V roce 1929, rok po n\u00e1vratu z t\u00e9to v\u00fdpravy, habilitoval na Karlov\u011b univerzit\u011b a stal se docentem radioaktivity a atmosf\u00e9rick\u00e9 elekt\u0159iny. Nad\u00e1le se zab\u00fdval v\u011bdeckou prac\u00ed i psan\u00edm knih.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">V letech 1933\u20131945 vedl v Praze St\u00e1tn\u00ed radiologick\u00fd \u00fastav, kter\u00fd p\u0159edt\u00edm zakl\u00e1dal. V letech 1936\u20131938 se pod\u00edlel na zalo\u017een\u00ed observato\u0159e atmosf\u00e9rick\u00e9 elekt\u0159iny na \u0160trbsk\u00e9m plese. Po roce 1945 byl vedouc\u00edm fyzik\u00e1ln\u00edho odd\u011blen\u00ed Radiol\u00e9\u010debn\u00e9ho \u00fastavu v Praze. Od roku 1951 vedl Onkologick\u00fd \u00fastav, kter\u00fd se stal o p\u011bt let pozd\u011bji sou\u010d\u00e1st\u00ed \u00dastavu jadern\u00e9 fyziky \u010cSAV. V roce 1953 byl zvolen \u010dlenem korespondentem \u010cSAV. Od 1. b\u0159ezna 1954 z\u00edskal profesuru na matematicko\u2013fyzik\u00e1ln\u00ed fakult\u011b Karlovy univerzity. Od 50. let byl expertem ministerstva zahrani\u010dn\u00edch v\u011bc\u00ed v UNESCO pro v\u00fdzkum atomov\u00e9ho z\u00e1\u0159en\u00ed. Od roku 1956 vedl katedru dozimetrie ionizuj\u00edc\u00edho z\u00e1\u0159en\u00ed na \u010cVUT.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Zem\u0159el p\u0159i l\u00e9\u010db\u011b 1. ledna 1973 v Karlov\u00fdch Varech.
